SPECIAL REPORT from the Change Music Series in Seattle Look to the Change Music Series as a well-executed forum to educate folks about music and technology through a smart, candid group of panelists. As evidence, one attendee prefaced her question to the panel by saying, "this is getting good." After a day of tech-talk came the cocktail soirees. The club crawl included artist showcases from Sup Pop Records (the Makers, Love As Laughter, Black Halos), Up Records (764-HERO, Enemymine, Octant, Sick Bees), Kill Rock Stars (Mecca Normal, Bangs, C Average Two Ton Boa), K Records (Black Anger, Shinin', Tilson, C.O.C.O. Nomad) and Man's Ruin Records (High on Fire, Acid King, Men of Porn, The Sensualists.) Participating venues included the Crocodile Café, Graceland, OK Hotel, the Showbox, Sit N'Spin. Note: The best show I've seen in awhile was the Thursday before at the Catwalk where New York's own, the ROSENBERGS, rocked back-to-back great songs from their forthcoming CD as a warm-up for MODERN ENGLISH. Next stop: San Francisco September 15-17 and London. Coming soon: CMJ 2000 Marathon NY Visit CMJ on the web: www.cmj.com Reported by Leanne Drum Napster shuts down. cdNOW's Allstar reports that a San Francisco federal court has ordered a temporary injunction on Napster's music trading site, effective at midnight on Friday, July 28. The site is under fire for allowing the free exchange of copyrighted materials. The injunction, which can be reversed once the issue goes to full trial, is likely to send Napster's 20 million users to other MP3 trading sites. Go figure. METALLICA reschedules. Now that James Hetfield's back is back intact, METALLICA is back with its full lineup. NME reports that Hetfield, who suffered a back injury in early July will front METALLICA for the remaining Summer Sanitarium tour dates. Band members from KORN, SYSTEM OF A DOWN, POWERMAN 5000, and KID ROCK had all tried to fill his shoes for several tour stops, but fans were rumored to be disappointed with the temporary fill-ins. Dallas, Atlanta, and Lexington, Kentucky will all be treated to free METALLICA shows to make up for the missing frontman. Compiled by Glennie Rabin |
